The Quarter Note

The quarter note (American) or crotchet (British) is notated with a filled-in oval note head. It has a straight, flagless stem. The stem usually points upwards if it is below the middle line of the stave or downwards if it is on or above the middle line.

Practicing Quarter Notes

A quarter note is played for one quarter of the duration of a whole note. To count eighth notes, set your metronome to 60 beats per minute. Count “one two three four, one two three four” and so on. “One, two, three and four” falls directly on the beat (click)Counting Quarter Notes
