Most Common Guitar Player Questions

Now more than ever, people are compelled to take up new and old hobbies as well as discovering abilities that they’ve always wanted to learn but maybe never had time for. In this video, we’ve chosen three of the topics you proposed so that Helmut—our very own pro guitar teacher here at Fretello—can teach you what he knows!

To start off, Helmut tackles the community question about fretboard orientation. Among his tips for practicing scale patterns are to do so repeatedly in the same key until it feels comfortable to play them in that key. At that point, you’ll want to switch to another key and practice scale patterns repeatedly in that key too, in addition to the key(s) that you’ve already gotten comfortable with. Patience is key, pun intended, so there’s no need to rush. Mastering scale patterns in different keys will take time, but once you do, it will open up the possibility of learning new songs easily. Helmut also discusses how establishing a fundamental understanding of chords can really assist with chord building.

The second question from our community asked about fingerpicking, so Helmut shows us some common issues that may arise when playing the guitar with this technique. These include knowing which fingers to use while playing and how to solve the problem of your fingers getting in the way of each other while fingerpicking. For the third topic, we’ll explore the Hendrix Thumb Technique which you inquired about when we asked for your requests. Helmut demonstrates how to achieve the Hendrix vibe that’s inspired so many musicians to this day.
